Google Chrome's development is high-paced and version numbers are not very significant, but it's weird to see a pre-beta release of Chrome 2.0, four months after Chrome 0.2. There are many new things in Chrome 2.0:

How to get the new version?

1. If you don't have Google Chrome, install it from google.com/chrome
2. Subscribe to the developer preview channel. This is required even if you've previously subscribed to the channel.
3. Wait until the new version is downloaded (you may force the updatie by opening the "About Google Chrome" dialog).

S740 Smartphone now to U.S. by HTC

While touch-screen smartphones like Apple's iPhone 3G and Research In Motion's BlackBerry Storm are popular, many business users just want a slim handset that makes typing out messages easy and quick.

With this is in mind, HTC is bringing its S740 smartphone to the United States, and its small size and powerful features could make it attractive for mobile professionals.

Physically, the S740 bears a slight resemblance to the HTC Touch Pro, but the S740 isn't as wide and doesn't have a touch screen. At about 1.7 inches, the smartphone looks like a skinny remote control. The handset does have a bit of bulk to make room for the slide-out, four-row keyboard, but at 4.9 ounces it's not too heavy.

Powered by Windows Mobile 6.1, the handset is capable of receiving push corporate e-mail and instant messaging on the go. The S740 comes preloaded with Pocket Office, so users can view Word, Excel, Outlook, and PDF files on the handset.

Users can stay connected with their e-mails and browse the Web with the integrated Wi-Fi. The U.S. version will be compatible with AT&T's 850-MHz and 1,900-MHz bands for high-speed 3G access up to 7.2 Mbps. The smartphone also will come with built-in GPS that can use the cellular data for assisted GPS services like location-based searches and navigation.

Even with its svelte size, the handset manages to pack in a 2.4-inch QVGA screen that has a 240-by-320 resolution. While not a media powerhouse, the S740 can play multiple audio and video formats. The handset also comes with a 3.2-megapixel camera that can be used to capture video.

By default, page backgrounds created with the Page Color option in the Page Background section on the Page Layout tab in Microsoft Office Word 2007 do not print. However, you can print them with the document if needed.

To include the page background when printing, click the Office button and then click Word Options. On the Display tab of the Word Options dialog box, select the printing option Print background colors and images, and then click OK. (Note that this setting is not document-specific and will apply to all documents that you print from Word 2007 while the setting is active.

Microsoft Dynamics^® AX 2009 Service Pack 1 (SP1) contains the complete set of updates that Microsoft has issued since the June 2008 RTM release of Microsoft Dynamics^® AX 2009, as well as a number of enhancements and new features to improve the product’s functionality and user experience.

Key highlights in this service pack release include:

1. Support for Microsoft SQL Server^® 2008.

2. Supports future GLS releases and targeted releases, such as the Environmental Sustainability module, which will require an SP1 environment for installation.

3. Updates both the SYS and GLS layers of the product. This means, for example, that if you already have GLS-TR installed on your system, SP1 will update this layer during the installation process.

4. You can now write XML documentation in X++® source code to document classes, class methods, and table methods. This XML documentation can be extracted from the source code to create an XML documentation file.

Microsoft is cooking a free security solution - “Morro” Antivirus for Windows 7, Vista SP2, XP SP3

Microsoft is cooking a free security solution, designed to integrate seamlessly with Windows 7, as well as with Windows Vista RTM/SP1/SP2 and Windows XP SP3. Advertised as a no-cost consumer security offering, code-named “Morro” is set up to be much more than a simple antivirus, also offering protection against spyware, rootkits and Trojan horses, according to the software giant.

Code-named “Morro” is expected to be made available in the second half of 2009, just in time for Windows 7, whose RTM is reportedly planned for mid-2009, and for the second Service Pack for Windows Vista.

The introduction of code-name “Morro” will be synonymous with the death of Windows Live OneCare. Microsoft informed that sales of the Windows Live OneCare subscription service would be discontinued completely, come June 30, 2009.

Great launch of Tweak UI For Windows Vista at South Asia MVP Meet 2008

At the recently concluded South Asia MVP Meet 2008 held at Goa, between 14-18th November 2008, Ultimate Windows Tweaker, a Tweak UI for Windows Vista was released by Howard Lo, Microsoft's Regional Team Manager (APAC), in the presence of Abhishek Kant, South Asia – MVP Lead and Abhishek Baxi, MVP Program Specialist. Earlier during the Meet, Pradeep Parappil - Program Manager Lead (Windows) gave an excellent presentation on Windows 7.

Most Vista users were missing the Tweak UI application, which Microsoft had released for XP, and this one promises to be the best thing for Windows Vista users.

This freeware tweaker, christened as Ultimate Windows Tweaker has over 130 registry tweaks, but is yet, just a 370 KB .exe file which does not require an install. It can even be used as a portable application. Its RTW v 1.0 is now available for download.

The application has been released by WinVistaClub, a Microsoft Featured Community, and has been written by Ramesh Kumar, MVP.

Let’s start off with the most visible change: we’re removing the horizontal ad from your space!

Your space is all about your content, the way you want to show it, so we’re reducing the amount of clutter and giving you more freedom by:

Removing the horizontal ad from the top of your space
Making all of the modules optional (even the Title and Tagline module, which previously couldn’t be removed)
Using a simpler header that has less text than other pages in Windows Live
Letting you change themes, fonts, colors, and background images on your space using the customize menu
Letting you rename or not show the title of each module on your space by using the settings menu for each module in customize mode
Letting you select exactly which photo albums to show in your photos module – you can even customize what parts of the photos interface to display

We’re also making some additional small changes to make your space look even better. One of the things we’ve done is to improve the typography on your space by using a larger, more readable default font, Segoe UI. It’s a subtle change, but it really helps make your content easier to read. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of our post from last week with the current font and with the new default font:

Developers making plans for Windows Azure, Windows 7

Like most of the developers and other technology professionals who attended the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference 2008, held at the Los Angeles Staples Center Oct. 27-30, Dan Rigby attended to see the latest from Microsoft and rub elbows with Microsoft’s technology leaders.

But equally important was the chance to catch up with peers, and meet some new ones. “It’s a great place to build up relationships with people I may only have met online,” says Rigby, Lead Software Engineer at Interactive Intelligence, an Indianapolis-based firm that develops call center software. “I got to meet a lot of people that I knew online through Facebook and other sites, and I saw a lot of Microsoft people I may have met in forums or online.”

For the 6,500 developers who attended PDC2008, the event is one of the tech highlights whenever it’s offered. But along with the usual networking, this year’s PDC also was the site of some major announcements from Microsoft. These include the Azure Services Platform, which extends Windows and an array of services such as Microsoft SQL Services and Microsoft .NET Services in the “cloud,” and also a first look at the new features of Windows 7 as well as Office 14, (code name of the next version of Office) and the new Office Web applications.

For most PDC attendees, the broad outlines of a Microsoft cloud initiative, plus a look at Windows 7, and Office had already been the subject of speculation and techosphere discussion, online and elsewhere.

Tool to Crack Wi-Fi's WPA Will Appear Next Week

Two researchers from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, have discovered a method of bypassing the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) encryption used by many wireless routers.

The exploit takes advantage of a weakness on networks that use WPA with TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol, a security algorithm based on key switching that is used to strengthen the WPA encryption) by circumventing the algorithm that encrypts the Wi-Fi data packets. Researchers Erik Tews and Martin Beck, who are members of the ethical hacking group known as Aircrack-ng, have not only discovered how to bypass WPA, they've also created a tool to do so. They plan to release the tool at the PacSec conference next week in Tokyo, Japan, Aircrack-ng member Rick Farina confirmed to PC Magazine on Friday.

Intel Launches Health Gadget to Monitor Illnesses

Intel has taken a somewhat shocking step away from its roots in the chip industry with its new Health Guide, a small tabletop gadget that Intel will build, sell, and manage through a suite of backend services

The Health Guide is being deployed now, after being approved by the FDA as a Class II device this past summer. It will be supplied by healthcare organizations. "This product is ready to go, end to end," said Louis Burns, general manager of the Digital Health division at Intel.

A small device about the size of a small-form-factor PC, the Health Guide PHS6000 is a small white box with a flip-up 10.4-inch LCD touchscreen, a webcam with privacy shield, and a touchscreen. Inside it is an undisclosed Intel processor and motherboard, together with Bluetooth and four USB ports.

Microsoft announced that the next version of Microsoft Office will include Office Web applications that will help improve productivity and enhance the desktop experience by enabling people to access, create, edit, share and collaborate on Office documents across multiple devices.

Microsoft will deliver Office Web applications - lightweight versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote - through a browser. With these new applications, people can use a browser to create, edit, and collaborate on Office documents. What’s great is that this provides a consistent Office experience when and where our customers want it, regardless of whether they are accessing their Office documents through the PC, phone, or browser.

Microsoft has introduced the Windows Se7en UI at PDC

During the Windows 7 reviewers workshop on Sunday Linda Averett demonstrated the user interface enhancements introduced with Windows 7. Keeping with the trend, Averett described herself as a PC, wearing a red top matching her fall colored desktop with orange and red aero glass tones.

The session was an overview of some new features demonstrated on Windows 7 build 6933.winmain.081020-1842. Unfortunately the build that will be handed out to PDC attendees will not feature most of the enhancements I am about to detail.

First up was the new Windows 7 desktop. The new desktop includes a thicker taskbar, improved system tray and no sidebar. The orb on the start menu also glistens after hover over.

Another great new feature named in the Windows 7 build as "preview desktop" but described as "peek into desktop", allows you to see through windows and straight onto the desktop. Interestingly Microsoft have decided to remove the Windows Sidebar and simply drop the gadgets onto the desktop.

Averett went on to describe data Microsoft had gathered regarding customising Windows. 30% of people customise their glass colour. Customers and OEMs both care a lot about customisation. Windows 7 boosts what you can do with the glass colour. You can now create theme sets and save them to share with friends and family.

Device stage was demonstrated next. This is a part of explorer which will demonstrate what a device is and what it can do. It's an opportunity for the device vendor to fully showcase the device and present a photo realistic image of the device. It has a task area at the bottom section where the vendor can provide links to inbuilt applications and device information. Microsoft believes this will transform opportunities for vendors. The entire device stage is an implementation of software + services and devices built inside an XML document.

A new feature in Windows 7 that was not fully demonstrated was the magnifier tool pictured below. This allows users to zoom into specific parts of the desktop.

Libraries are now included in Windows 7 to help you better manage documents. Libraries is a collection of content like photos, pictures and music. Libraries allow you to add storage and keep the pictures stored locally across lots of drives but have links to the library.

Federated search allows you to search across multiple PCs to pull photos from another photo library on another PC. The new search pane gives you a great preview of documents too within explorer.

HomeGroup is the feature that allows federated search to search across multiple PC libraries. A HomeGroup allows you to easily link Windows 7 computers on your home network so that you can share pictures, music, videos, documents and devices. It also makes them ready to stream media to devices on your home network such as a media extender. You can help protect your HomeGroup with a password, and you can choose what you want to share.

Another demonstration focussed on the new "PlayTo" option that will stream your music from other PCs and other music libraries (including iTunes) to your media receivers or other PCs. Windows Media Player now plays AAC songs that iTunes uses but as Apple does not license FairPlay content Microsoft is unable to provide this functionality. PlayTo also works on pictures and videos.

The ASP.NET MVC Beta release provides a new Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework on top of the existing ASP.NET 3.5 runtime. This means that developers can take advantage of the MVC design patterns to create their Web Applications which includes the ability to achieve and maintain a clear separation of concerns (the UI or view from the business and application logic and backend data), as well as facilitate test driven development (TDD).

The ASP.NET MVC framework defines a specific pattern to the Web Application folder structure and provides a controller base-class to handle and process requests for “actions”. Developers can take advantage of the specific Visual Studio 2008 MVC templates within this release to create their Web applications, which includes the ability to select a specific Unit Test structure to accompany their Web Application development.

Showing Formulas in Microsoft Office Excel Instead of Their Results

Sometimes in an Excel worksheet you want to display formulas instead of their results. Here’s how:

1. Click the Office button, and then click Excel Options at the bottom of the menu.

2. Click Advanced, click Display options for this worksheet, click Show formulas in cells instead of their calculated results, and then click OK.

Use Your Own Pictures in SmartArt

You can insert your own pictures into Microsoft SmartArt graphics in your presentation.

1. Click the Insert tab on the Ribbon, click SmartArt, and then click the SmartArt graphic that you want to insert.

2. Select the picture that you want to add to your presentation.

3. Right-click an individual shape in SmartArt, and then click Paste to insert the picture you selected.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each shape.

5. Complete your presentation by applying your preferred background design.

Creating a Watermark in Excel

To add a watermark at the top of your Microsoft Office Excel worksheet:

1. In your Excel file, click Insert, and then in the Text section, click Header & Footer.

2. With your pointer in the center section of the header, click Picture in the Header & Footer Elements section of the Design tab, browse your hard disk drive to find the picture you want, and then click OK.

3. You may need to press ENTER several times to center the watermark on the page.

hello readers, I hav found an intresting Bug... just try it.

The instructions and screenshots are given below

1> copy any URL say " http://www.microsoft.com/ "

2> create new notepad file. as shown in screenshot below

3> name that folder to "[your URL].txt" <u will get prompt messege..>

Your filename becomes " httpwww.microsoft.com.txt "

4> open that file and just right click and copy.....

u will see that the URL which u hav copied earlier becomes
" httpwww.microsoft.com " . you will find " \\ " missing.

Try this and giv the reply...

MSN Mobile, available from on any phone at mobile.msn.com, delivers news, email, sports, search, weather, entertainment links like movie listings and horoscopes, and even videos right to your mobile phone.

Now you can add one more option to that extensive list: Encarta. The Encarta option is now available from the “All” menu, which is where you’ll find all of the items not listed directly on the main MSN Mobile homepage. From within the new Encarta feature you can check out a quote of the day, read three editorially-selected articles each day, take a quiz, and try to guess the Mystery Picture of the day. However, the most important feature in the mobilized version of Encarta is the article search feature. How many times have you had to whip out your phone and look something up in order settle an argument?

This is almost a near-daily occurrence in my house. With Encarta, searching for the answers to those questions is easy - just enter the term in the search box and go. You can rest assured that the answers you find are accurate, too, since it's coming from the Encarta Encyclopedia. (This is especially good for settling bets where money was involved, too.

The DevSta {Challenge 2008} - coding comp for Australian developers

On October 8th, at 8.08am, the DEVSTA competition launches to find Australia’s brightest coder (you don’t have to be a professional – you just need to be able to work under pressure and get the project done).

That’s 8:08, 8/8/08… see the pattern? If you do, you’ll understand why the comp runs for 200 hours and 8 minutes.

Don’t mess around – at 8:08 the project brief is announced and you need to get started – so make sure you sign up now so you don’t let the others get a headstart.

You don’t have to be employed as a Developer to enter. As long as you can write code, you qualify.

To get started, you'll need a Windows LIVE ID and will need to create an online DevSta ID. The challenge begins when the brief is released at 0808 EST on Monday 29 September. You’ll have just 200 hours and 8 minutes to prove your skills using Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2008. All entries must be submitted as a Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 project and be submitted to this site before the challenge ends at 1716 EST on Tuesday 7 October 2008.

Use Search to Find E-Mail Messages - Microsoft Office Outlook 2007

In Microsoft Office Outlook, e-mail search helps you locate messages by keyword or phrase. You can also use search folders to find mail by type of message.

To locate specific keywords or phrases within e-mail messages:

Type a word or phrase in the Search box at the top of your Outlook Inbox. The search starts automatically as soon as you stop typing. Search results will appear in the main window of your Inbox. To return to your normal Inbox, click Clear Search (the green ×) to the right of the Search box.

You can enable search folders from the mail pane on the left of your Inbox. To expand the folders tree, click Search Folders. Outlook comes with three default search folders: For Follow Up, Large Mail, and Unread Mail.

To add new search folders, click File, point to New, and then click Search Folder.

To build a custom search folder:

1. Click Search Folder, and then either click a predefined folder name, or scroll down and click Create a custom Search Folder.

2. Click Choose, give the new folder a name, and then click Criteria to fill in the search terms.

Silverlight Version 2 RC0 Released!!

This Service Pack provides you with all of the functionality you had with our earlier Expression Blend 2.5 June 2008 Preview. Besides allowing you to create new projects for WPF, Silverlight 1, and Silverlight 2 RC, we are also exposing new platform functionality like Font Embedding / Subsetting for Silverlight 2 projects. More on this new functionality in future blog posts.

One thing to note, which is different from how we handled releases in the past, is that Expression Blend 2 SP1 Preview will install on top of Expression Blend 2. This will not be a side-by-side installation. This service pack is also an evolution of Expression Blend 2.5, so there will be no future Expression Blend 2.5 releases.
